MND Association Jersey

The Jersey Branch of the MND Association was formed in the spring of 1991 during the, illness with Motor Neurone Disease (“MND”), of local nurse, Rosemary A’Court. Donations in her memory helped towards starting up the Jersey Branch, which is registered with the Association of Jersey Charities. While affiliated to the MND Association (UK), the Jersey Branch has complete control over all funds raised for MNDA Jersey.

The Jersey Branch is run entirely by volunteers and together with their four qualified Association Visitors, they aim to provide the best possible care and support to Islanders and their families living with MND, enabling them to achieve the highest quality of life and to remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

MND is a fatal, rapidly progressing disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It attacks the nerves that control movement, so muscles no longer work. Over 80% of people with MND will have communication difficulties, including for some, a complete loss of voice. MND can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk and eventually breathe.

MND kills a third of people within a year and more than half within two years of diagnosis.

A person’s lifetime risk of developing MND is up to 1 in 300. That’s equivalent to 177 out of the 53,000 people that ran London marathon in 2024. It affects more than 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time.

There is currently no cure for MND. The MND Association focuses on improving access to care, research and campaigning for those people living with or affected by MND.
