Amazing GAPS adventure for Rachel

Rachel Leck has just returned from an exciting trip to Mauritius to take part in the Commonwealth GAPS Camp.

GAPS, which stands for Gather Adjust Prepare Sustain, is a selective programme for Commonwealth Games Federations where para athletes and their coaches can come together, learn and train.  Rachel is there first athlete from Jersey to be invited to attend a GAPS camp.

Rachel had a full week of sessions, including:

  • individual training sessions with event specific coaches
  • technical strength and conditioning coaching, including pre-hab
  • sessions focusing on mental skills
  • learning on anti-doping
  • planning for 2026

With the 2026 Commonwealth Games being a key goal for Rachel, this opportunity seems to have come at just the right time.

Rachel reflected on her week:

” Firstly, this camp really opened my eyes to what I’m capable of, both as an athlete and as someone who can make a difference.  Meeting other athletes from around the world was incredible — we all shared similar dreams and struggles, and that made me feel so much stronger.  The coaching sessions were intense and pushed me to new levels, helping me see that I’ve got what it takes to keep reaching higher.  I left feeling like I can really go for my goals and help inspire others to go after theirs too.
Secondly, the camp gave me a big confidence boost.  It wasn’t just about making me a better athlete — it was about showing me how much my voice and actions can actually matter.  I realized that “showing up” means being a role model and speaking up for what I believe in, especially when it comes to fairness and inclusion. Being surrounded by people who were so passionate about using sports for good just made me want to go home and make a difference however I can.
So finally I’m going back with a real drive to create something that opens up sports opportunities for young people who might not have access otherwise.  I want to set up workshops or programs in my community where kids can get training and mentorship, no matter their background.  The camp made me realise how powerful sports can be in bringing people together and breaking down barriers, so I want to share that back home and hopefully inspire others to do the same. ”
