Jersey Spartan AC held their last cross-country race of the year at the weekend on the dunes near Kempt Tower. On a clockwise 5 lap course of 5.12miles the early pace was set by Dave Woodsford before postman Jon Coote took over the lead. Coote who has recently started racing with a full beard which seems to make him go faster, held first position until he was passed by Tony Banks, Phil Maguire and Damian Maher. It was 39 year old Banks who slowly extended his lead to finish in a time of 30 minutes 11 seconds, which also won him the run-of-the-day award. Teenager Maguire who has raced consistently well all season, finished runner-up in 31:29 with the fast finishing Maher just behind in third spot in 31:37.
Jo Gorrod still has the place as Jersey’s finest female long distance runner. She was a clear winner in the women’s race in 32:58 ahead of second- placed Katie Thompson in 35:35 and Andrea Banks in third in 37:43.
